WHAT IS A SALES INVOICE?
A sales invoice is a document which details out the amount of money you are owed by a customer or client.
You meet a new client and agree to carry out SEO research at a price of £250. Once you have complete the agreed research you need to put in a request for your client to pay you – this is a sales invoice.
WHAT MUST BE INCLUDED ON A SALES INVOICE?
There are a number of details that you must include on a sales invoice (these are legal requirements), so you should make sure the following are included whether you opt to use our template or create your own:
- an invoice number;
- your name and business name, your trading address and contact information;
- the company name and address of the customer you’re invoicing;
- a clear description of what you’re charging for;
- the date the goods or service were provided (supply date);
- the date of the sales invoice;
- the amount(s) being charged;
- VAT rate being used (only if VAT registered);
- VAT amount (only if you are VAT registered);
- VAT registration number;
- the total amount owed (including VAT, if VAT registered);
- Limited Company Name, as per your incorporation certificate (if you are incorporated);
- Your Registered Office Address, if you are a Limited Company;
- Limited Company Registration Number (if you are incorporated).
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO INCLUDE ON YOUR SALES INVOICE
Although the following are not legal requirements, including the following are either helpful or necessary to ensure you get paid promptly:
- Your bank details;
- Your payment terms for example: upon receipt,14days or 30 days;
- A description of the work carried out;
- A contact name in your customers organisation;
- PO number if your client has issued one to you.
